The major metropolis of Adelaide now has the largest public access LoRaWAN per capita in Australia thanks to the Connected Cities Adelaide project. This is providing critical digital infrastructure for making it a test bed for next generation IoT, AI and automation solutions. These cities selected Meshed to be responsible for the end to end deployment of the project across 3 phases: network, devices and data.
Connected Cities is a cross-city collaboration to establish a metropolitan wide, open access, low-power wireless network spanning across eastern, western and northern Adelaide. Covering over 50 per cent of the metropolitan area, it is focused on enhancing the overall liveability, sustainability and customer experience. It was initiated with the local government areas (LGAs) of Prospect, Burnside, Campbelltown, Playford and Port Adelaide Enfield back in 2018, alongside the University of Adelaide’s Smart City Consortium. The network has now expanded to include the LGAs of Tea Tree Gully, West Torrens, Marion and Adelaide Hills.

Cross-city partnership with Connected Cities Adelaide
This project spans across government, university, industry, local business and community. The community access network is supporting 10 use cases across smart cities, environment and asset management, allowing improved operational efficiencies and customer experience. Each council has access to a data visualisation dashboard which is underpinned by the Data Sharing Framework developed by the University of Adelaide. Partners for the Project include the Open Sensing and Smart Cities Solutions.

Connected Cities helps South Australians to access this growing sector by the implementation of an enterprise grade LoRaWAN IoT network. This is the largest, public access LoRaWAN network in Australia, per capita.
Since going fully operational in June 2019, other LGAs in the region have joined the network. The Local Government Supervisors Association (LGSA) is supporting the initiative to promote a state-wide public access IoT data network using the Connected Cities model.
